Choosing an Honest Concrete Contractor: Questions Worth Asking

Honesty is the trait that matters most in a contractor — and it is testable. Here are the questions that separate the contractors who will do right by you from the ones who will not.

Choosing an Honest Concrete Contractor: Questions Worth Asking

After 15-plus years of pouring concrete across Middle and Southern Tennessee, the one trait that separates contractors who do right by their customers from the ones who do not is honesty. Skill can be hired. Honesty is what shows up when something goes wrong — and on a concrete job, something will eventually go wrong, because concrete is a natural material in a natural environment. Here is how we tell an honest contractor from the rest, and the questions worth asking before you sign.

01Will you give me a written, itemized estimate?

An honest contractor puts the scope in writing — the thickness, the mix, the reinforcement, the sub-base, the finish, the cleanup, and the warranty. A contractor who will not write it down is not committed to it. The estimate is a contract for the work; if the details are not on it, they are negotiable in the contractor's favor, not yours.

02What concrete mix will you use, and what PSI?

An honest contractor specifies the mix. For a driveway in our climate, we use at least 4,000 PSI with air entrainment. If a contractor cannot tell you the mix, they are not thinking about it — and a contractor not thinking about the mix is not thinking about your driveway's lifespan.

03How will you prepare the sub-base?

This is the question that separates the pros. An honest contractor describes their sub-base process — excavate to depth, compact, add gravel — without being prompted. A contractor who says the sub-base 'will be fine' or 'does not need it' is either cutting a corner or does not know better. Either way, your driveway pays for it.

04Where are some recent jobs I can drive by?

Concrete is visible and verifiable. An honest contractor can point to recent local work and does not mind you driving by. If the only references are years old or out of state, that tells you something. In Middle Tennessee, we can point to driveways and patios we poured years ago that still look right.

05What is not included in the bid?

An honest contractor tells you what is excluded as well as what is included. Maybe drainage is extra, maybe the sealer is a separate line, maybe permitting is your responsibility. Knowing what is not in the price is how you avoid the surprise add-ons that turn a cheap bid into an expensive job.

06What happens if something goes wrong?

Ask this directly. An honest contractor describes their warranty and how they handle call-backs without getting defensive. A contractor who acts offended by the question or who has no answer is telling you what a future problem will feel like. We stand behind our work because the way we handle a problem matters more than the problem itself.

07Who will actually be on site?

Is the crew the contractor's employees, or a subcontractor? Will the person who quoted the job be on site? An honest contractor answers plainly. A contractor who subs out the whole job and never shows up has no skin in the outcome.

08How long will the job take, realistically?

An honest contractor gives a realistic timeline, including the cure time before the driveway is usable. The bid you want to hear is 'two days,' but the honest answer is usually 'a day to pour, then stay off it for a week.' If a contractor promises the timeline you want rather than the timeline the work needs, that is a warning sign.

09Trust the communication

The bid stage is the best the contractor will ever communicate with you. If calls go unanswered before you have signed, they will not be answered after. If the contractor talks over you, dismisses your questions, or cannot explain the work in language you understand, that is who you will be dealing with for the life of the project. Hire the contractor who answers the phone, shows up, and explains things plainly.

10Why we give free on-site evaluations

We evaluate every driveway in person before we quote it, because the right answer is different for every property. We would rather tell you what your driveway actually needs than sell you what is easiest to quote. That is the approach we would want for our own homes, and it is the approach we bring to every job across Middle and Southern Tennessee.

Key Takeaway

Honesty is testable. Ask for a written estimate, the mix spec, the sub-base plan, recent references, what is excluded, the warranty, who is on site, and a realistic timeline — and trust how the contractor answers.
